Is Twitter experience on your resume?
by Cheryl Phillips

Your job history might not be as important as your Twitter experience in today's competitive job market. Apparently it's not what you know but who you know that might help you land a job.

Many  job boards are listing positions that require applicants to have Twitter experience, most importantly those who know how to attract Twitter followers.

In an article on On-Line Media Daily, career coach Nance Rosen, said,  "brands looking to hire marketing professionals want 'influencer's', 'connectors' and 'mavens' -- people that others turn to for information, news and trends."

Rosen, CEO of  Pegasus Media World, went on to say, "More companies are asking for followers and friends, but even more want lots of experience in social media. It's only a matter of seconds, minutes or hours before marketers look at what is a natural phenomenon like viral marketing and seek to institutionalize it."

Best Buy Co., Inc. recently had a job posting on-line for a senior manager for emerging media marketing. Requirements? 1,000 Twitter followers, 500 Facebook friends and 250 LinkedIn connections. Best Buy obviously was looking for someone socially connected in the media world but in a time when you can purchase Twitter followers for $14.95 from a spam site, how qualified are this person's skills if they are measured by Twitter followers?

Social media might just be causing qualified applicants to lose out on a great position if they aren't active on Twitter, Facebook and other popular sites. Looks like it is time to brush up on who you know in the social media world if you're hunting for a job.
